Burberry Prorsum Spring 2012-Color

In continuation from my previous posting of the Burberry Spring collection, I thought I would focus this post on the color hues sent down the runway. It looks like a fall color palette but it was surprisingly a spring collection. I thought the plums, reds and deep blues worked perfectly with the pops of prints, beading and textured leather. A rich ethnic vibe paired with classic cuts. A very inspiring collection indeed!

Armani Spring 2012

I am not a big fan personally of the silky, dusty purple shades that Armani sent down the runway this past spring yet I was strangely drawn to them. These soft hues looked remarkably new and fresh yet classic and sophisticated at the same time. Clean and light the colors and cuts were subtle and understated. I especially liked the gold printed fabric giving it a little bit of an exotic flavor.

Stripes and rattan, a great combination! Burberry sent down rich colors and made a bold statement on stripes. The trend is not going away but getting even more exposure. Hats, skirts and even trench coats get the linear stripe treatment. Very inspiring!

While at the Tri-Kes annual company meeting in Scottsdale, AZ we were able to get a private tour of the famous Boulder House. The home is located in North Scottsdale and is considered by many as an architectural and cultural masterpiece. Built by Charles Johnson in 1980, the home is listed on the National Registry of Historical Places and offers petroglyphs and evidence of Native people living at the site. A little ahead of its time..it was very inspiring to photograph.

Color Focus: Mustard Seed

Mustard Seed. A color rich and spicy at the same time. Often overlooked and underused, this earthy color is deep and golden. With a little added zest, this color is a new twist on the everyday traditional gold. Looking modern and natural this 2012 mustard color is starting to be used more and more in interiors and fashion. Amazing with rich browns and golds it also works well with creams, silvers and black. Modern or traditional we will be seeing more of mustard in the future. I know what you’re thinking. A mint green. Really? It seemed a little strange to me too but the more I saw this color on the Spring runways, the more I thought this color worked perfectly with the up and coming Art Deco retro inspired trend we are seeing more and more of. It reminded me of the sea green glass shades of the 1920’s. In its day, this color was used in jewelry design, lighting, wall colors and of course fashion. It was if a Tamara de Lempicka painting came to life to inspire us in the here and now. Design Focus: Joy

Joy is a modern overall print design found in our Lanark Reaction decorative collection. Inspired by soft and contoured oval shapes found in architecture and fashion, Joy is light, fresh and fun. I wanted to design a pattern that was part stripe, part texture. I ended up using the oval shape as shadow and faded out the edges to create a diffused look. In the end I was able to create a bubbly, airy and spa like feel. A very joyful experience! Design Focus: Boardwalk

Boardwalk is one our newest designs for Lanark and was inspired by a time period long gone by. The vintage Boardwalk was full of theatre and pure fun. It was where people went to escape their troubles. I was inspired by this time period and by the art deco motifs of the 1920’s. In creating Boardwalk I wanted to design a new type of multi colored stripe. One that subtly blends together classic decorative motifs with a natural handmade finish. I foresee the Art deco movement to make a strong comeback in the next few years. Already the triangle shape can be found in jewelry, fashion and home markets. Boardwalk reflects that coming trend and is a unique design in the wall-covering world. Alexander McQueen Spring 2011

This beautiful dress was from last season's Alexander McQueens Spring runway show. The old world styling takes you to back to the Elizabethan era and pulls you into a richly layered oil painting. The colors are bold and strong and the gold embossed accessories dramatic. What is the most amazing is the perfect styling of her hair...eerily similar to a classic Vermeer painting. Very inspiring!

The luxe nature of gold went away for a while but now it is back big time. It is back not in a blingy 1980’s, Mr T sort of way either. The gold shade of today relies more on the texture and finish than the in your face shine. The look now is handcrafted, delicate and full of movement. Whether it is a piece of jewelry, a silk embossed dress or a beaded clutch, gold is making a bold comeback. As I walked trough the ABC Home store in New York , I noticed a trend that has been around for a little while now... the pairing of matte and gloss. Whether it was a matte velvet chair with a high gloss side table (both in black) or the pairing of a gloss white table light against the flat finish of a concrete wall, this trend is still very popular. Marimekko Flagship Store NYC

While in New York City this week I was able to visit the new Marimekko store on 5th and 23rd. The store showcased more than just their traditional home linens and bedding. At their new flagship location you are able to purchase yardage of a huge range of their signature patterns, dishware, bags and even children's and women's clothing. The classic bold Marimekko colors and designs enliven the whole entire space. While at the DeCordova museum in nearby Lincoln, MA, I was able to photograph a beautiful large-scale installation created by Soo Sunny Park and Spencer Topol. The artwork merges together the natural light in the museum with the flow of the visitors through this transitional space to create an ever-changing sculptural sound scape. Color Focus: Buttercup

The yellow trend we saw last Spring has continued into this season's collections both on the runway and in the stores. Last year's yellow had an acid cast and was very, very bright. This spring, designers kept the brightness but toned down the acid level a little bit. How to use it? Well, this "buttercup" shade works great when paired with black, taupes and greys. This sporty yet sophisticated color combination makes the yellow useable with a very subtle punkish edge that brings a smile to your face. Dior Runway Styling: Spring 2012

What struck me most about the Christian Dior Spring runway show was not just the clothes but the unique styling of the models. They had a 1920's look and feel about them. The styling was serious, classic and modest. There was a no nonsense vintage simplicity to it. With little or no jewelry, sharp hats and the simple necklines, the Dior took us back in time.

The Ocho Lounge at the Hotel Havana is a light filled courtyard bar and restaurant overlooking the San Antonio Riverwalk. Filled with vintage furniture and painted in bright Cuban inspired colors, the Ocho lounge is a unique space that mixes the old and new in a refreshing and inventive way. Design Focus: Zanzibar

One of the first designs I created for the Lanark brand was the textile inspired pattern Zanzibar. With the global trends just starting to emerge, I wanted to design a pattern inspired by the traditional African “Kente” cloth. The design has a woven effect with strands of metal threads printed as a subtle highlight to the layered vertical weave. Since it was introduced the handcrafted African look has become more and more popular on the fashion runway and in interior projects. Bella Donna

Washed out, pale and powdery colors have been the trend in fashion for a few years now. Though popular, these shades have never really made it into the interior marketplace. With the popularity of the movie “Black Swan” and the more feminine and ballerina type cuts seen on the runway, a new cleaner shade has emerged. Bella Donna is a rose-gold like shade, warm and rich in hue. Less frosty than shades of the past, this color looks amazing when translated in a metal, silk or leather. Dale Chihuly at the MFA Boston

Dale Chihuly is known for his colorful and wild glass-based works. When visiting his show at the MFA Boston a few weeks ago I was equally inspired by the subtle and sheer color shown in his Basket's series. Inspired by the Northwest coastline, the effect is luminous, organic and natural.

Proenza Schouler's Fall collection showcased a rich palette of ethnic hues and patterns. To me it looked more inspired by African textiles instead of the stated Southwest influence. It really doesn't matter anyway, the clothing is colorful, textural and very bold!

Quebec City

My husband and I spent a few days visiting Quebec City while on vacation last week. Different than Montreal, Quebec City is small, historical and very French. We found the old city a bit too touristy for our taste and ended up walking down beautiful quiet streets just outside the city's ancient walls. (where these selected photos were taken) My husband and I love to find unique places to eat when we travel. Some of the restaurants we found and loved on this trip, were not even in the old city but more in the neighborhoods the locals haunt. Here are some of the places we enjoyed and would definitely visit again!

Le Moine Echanson is a very small restaurant that posts their every changing menu on a chalkboard that takes up an entire wall. Le Clocher Penche is a bistro that has a relaxed and natural feel to it's interior, service and food.

Last but not least, Le Cafe du Monde is a waterfront bistro that serves classic French food with an amazing view of the St Lawrence waterfront. We enjoyed a delicious duck confit salad paired with a classic rose. When were the coral and red shades going to merge? I often wondered about this. This past spring I saw a new pink color entering our design world. With everyone loving the bright coral oranges seen in all the stores and now in interiors, I think were finally ready for a new rich pink shade. Hydrangea is a luscious and deep twist on the pink-red color family. Seen on the Spring 2011 runways this shade is fun and strangely useable. Light and Natural. This was my focus when I designed the pattern “Verdant” for the Lanark Reaction collection. I wanted the prints to be layered in shape and sheer in it’s color. Similar to the current organic and nature trends seen in fashion, interiors, perfumes and craft, I wanted Verdant to be a modern and airy leaf design. A meandering stripe for the wall, Verdant is peaceful, soothing and healing. This past spring and fall, fashion designers have been sending bold color pairings down the runway in dresses, tops and even bags. A little 1980's, a little Art Nouveau, and very energizing!

Design Focus: Bliss

I love the oval shape. There is something mellow, relaxing and retro about the oval that circles just don’t do. When I designed the pattern “Bliss” for the Lanark Reaction collection a few years ago I was inspired by my own personal affinity for the shape and the current trends I saw on the fashion runways. Bliss is a large-scale vertical stripe design with a repeating oval shape slowly fading into the background. It is subtle and soft; a very useable modern look. One of the most overlooked colors this past Spring season was this yellow-orange color I will call “Marigold”. Lively, sporty and vibrant this new twist on a gold is an emerging color in the design community. Not quite an orange but fresh like a yellow this shade looks amazing paired with shades of grey. One of the subtle yet interesting pieces of imagery I photographed at the ABC Carpet and Home store in NYC a few weekends ago was the natural artwork seen on their furniture throughout their store. Created from random and simple objects, glitter and sand, the modern and impromptu creations added a touch of whimsical fun to their interior showspace. It almost begged you to try it on your own furniture at home.

One of the really fun and simple trends taken from the past few Spring runway collections was the polka dot print trend. We haven't seen this look in a very long time. The 80's reinvented it from the 1950's and here we are again reinventing it in 2011. This time around it is the focal point, bold and statement making. Whether it is it a shoe or a rug, I think dots are great in small doses (especially when printed in a strong contrast.) Louis Vuitton's Spring runway show had intense color combinations with a touch of 80's flash. The fuchsia and rich russet shades felt saturated with pigment in the silk fabric material. With the addition of sequins and metallic accents this collection was ready for Studio 54!

Bold colors have been seen everywhere this past spring season on the fashion runways. This is not news. One of the most exciting colors though is this new bold purple. Almost a cousin of ultramarine blue, this ultra purple shade is jolt of sophistication. It works great with neutrals, greys and white and elevates a space with it's modernity. Not for the faint of heart I see rich colors like this purple being used more and more in the future. Color Palette Inspiration: Willamette Valley, OR

Last year I visited the Willamette Valley wine country south of Portland, OR. It was in late September and the leaves were just starting to turn. This made the wineries even the more beautiful. The colors were vibrant, clean and fresh. The photo I took made great inspiration for a color palette. Art of the Americas Wing - MFA Boston

This past winter I visited the new Art of the Americas wing at the Museum of Fine Arts here in Boston. It is a great new wing devoted to the Art of the Americas, from the Pre-Colombian era through the third quarter of the twentieth century. What most impressed me was not just the 63-foot-high ceilings in the glass-enclosed courtyard but the new interactive touch screen stations. These stations let visitors choose paintings to install in their own virtual gallery and zoom in closely to examine the works of art shown throughout the space. The museum also had a special interactive Tac Table made by the Cambridge-based company of the same name. This electronic table allows visitors to manipulate signature works of art from artists such as Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe and Charles Sheeler. With a single tap, you can add or subtract an element from a painting, change the background, and share your work with others standing around the table. As you see from my photo the kids and adults loved it! A great new museum addition. I can't wait to go back. Painting shown: Frank Stella, Hiraqla, 1968.

The spring fashion runways were full of bright colors and vibrant hues. One of the most refreshing colors was a clean fresh blue shade. Different from the aqua green blues of the past few years, this blue is modern and techno based. I decided to call it Electro blue, a futuristic color that will bring a sense of energy and optimism to any interior space. I was searching for inspiration last week for new embossing textures. I found detailed shots from Armani Prive's past two fall runway collections. Shimmering round beads and pearlized shapes adorned everything from pants to shirts. Fabrics were textured and layered with colors. Very inspiring!

Color Palette Inspiration: Villandry, France

I took this photo on a trip to the Loire Valley two years ago. The Villandry chateau that my husband and I visited is famous for it's intricate gardens. After touring the grounds and the interior of the house, we were led into a large courtyard. I found the wear and tear on the exterior of the chateau showed layers of subtle colors. Similar to a progressive metal sculpture Element is a neo-contemporary wall covering pattern. This minimal look is coming back into vogue in the fashion world as we speak. The Spring fashion runways were a prime example. Architectural in form the colors are equally sophisticated. Some people think trends work in stages of hierarchy. First they are introduced to the high end markets then the trend filters down to the mass market. Well, the internet has done on number on that idea. Here is an example. The China blue or blue porcelain trend has been seen on the Spring 2011 runway and in retail stores at the same time. You can either buy a Rodarte couture skirt or a toothbrush holder from Target's Blue Ink collection. Your choice. It is refreshing and fun to be a designer seeing trends and knowing others do too. Whatever their level or status of product they create. If we didn't think the wood trend was big it just got bigger. Rodarte's Spring 2011 collection should have been called "Into the Woods". Layers of printed wood in a variety of hues and grains went beyond earthy and came across as modern runway sculpture. Ornamental leaf embroidery in a soft green balanced off the edgy hard wood looks. Strangely beautiful.

Ivory Coast

Similar to the luminescent hues seen in capiz shells, Ivory Coast is a design that brings that luxe finish indoors. Sometimes when I travel I see color palettes pop out right in front of me. I decided to start a new section in the On Trend Today blog to share these photos and the color palettes they inspired. I will also list coordinating Lanark designs below the inspiration photo for added reference. The above photo was taken in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I love the sharp contrast between the lime green apples and the earthy shades of the rocks. The deep blue black shade grounds the entire palette. The spring runways were not all filled with super bright colors. Deep neutrals were also seen. Lanvin's Spring collection had crepe silk dresses that were structured yet draped beautifully. A very down to earth palette of shades. Very inspiring.

Enchanted

Enchanted is my twist on the classic look of the exotic shagreen sharkskin texture. Expensive and timeless, this natural finish brings luxury and nature together. Seen in the fashion world mostly on accessories this shagreen is subtle in its elegance. I wanted to take it further. Our version, Enchanted, was printed with rich metallic pigments and interference pearls. The importance of purple and reds within the last few years has been a color trend that needed to evolve. Hence, the development of this new pink/purple hue which I call Blossom. Seen on the most recent Spring runways this color shade accents both the red, plum and orange shades without going overboard. Not too bright and not too feminine, this soft fuchsia shade is rich and very useable. Within the past few years the trend has been leaning towards using lighter shades of woods in interiors. I felt it was necessary to focus on this classic hue that reflects and accents this shift. A few months back I visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Fine Art. I spent a great amount of time in their South and Southeast Asian Art section. Their collection is impressive but I was most taken with the color and lighting of the ancient sculptures. The creative angles of the light accented the textures and shapes while the color of the walls created added depth and warmth. I highly recommend a visit to this wonderful and inspiring collection.

Iridescent Blue-Green

The Fall and Spring runways have shown a variety of color trends, from earth bound neutrals to retro-80's brights. Teal shades have been popular for a while now and the trend continues but with a elegant twist. More than just a hue of color, this luxe effect is luminescent, similar to the shimmery plumes of a peacock. This iridescent blue-green shade shines in silk, satin and metal. With rich interference effects the color mimics a glistening Caribbean sea or the wings of a butterfly. Ethereal and showy, yes. But sometimes bold can be beautiful. Many years ago I made a visit to Copenhagen, Denmark for a design and trend inspiration trip. While staying at the SAS Royal Copenhagen hotel (designed by the famed architect Arne Jacobsen) and touring their many design museums, I fell in love with the Danish lifestyle and design aesthetic. I created Scandia for Lanark using the many fond memories from this trip. Scandia is a minimal circle in the square design that has a playful side to it. Clean and simple yet multicolored with a subtle grid texture, Scandia is a timeless design for all interior projects. The title of this post seems so boring...straw. Yet this trend for spring is not. Lately designers have been using the roughness of raw straw and transforming it into modern fashion pieces. Chanel's 2010 spring runway had a "home on the farm" look with rough edging on their clothes and handcrafted classic bags with texture. As our world get filled with electronic tools to help streamline our lives, designers and artists are using straw as a medium as a primal counter to all of this technology. The effect is textural, real and very beautiful. Design Inspiration: Sculpture

While I was in Oregon for the Color Marketing Conference a few weeks ago, I was able to make a short visit to the Portland Art Museum. While I was there I saw an amazing sculpture by Ursula Von Rydingsvard called P's and Q's. Made of pieced together cedar and accented with graphite, this earthy piece was hand carved into a patchwork of angled geometric shapes. Standing at over 10ft tall it was a very impressive piece that could be viewed from all sides. I was able to take a few detailed pictures which show the rough carvings and the mica like hues of the graphite pigments. Midnight blue is the new black. A departure away from navy, this new deep blue is almost black. Made richer through textural finishes such as silk and suede, this new color hue is serious and elegant at the same time. It all started with this wood inlay bowl in the center. The wood layers looked liked they were dyed with pigments in their purest state; like they were just recently dug up from the ground. I noticed that this new color combination moved away from the classic bright rainbow shades to a more muted and earthy color combination. I then started to spot that same color combination on the runways and accessories. With the use of orange as a grounding color with accents of turquoise and yellow with neutrals in the background, this color combination is weirdly fresh. Urban

Urban is a modern grid design inspired by minimal architecture and fashion. Similar to the city grid that makes up every large urban community across the world, our Lanark design is uptown and downtown at the same time. Cross streets reminiscent of my former city, New York, NY. Created in a block print style method, the look is more handcraft than hard edge. This is a result of designing in the simplest of ways, by only using straight lines and negative space. The hues in the city inspired palette are all clean and soft neutrals with the occasional bold darks mixed in. The result is a very usable pattern for all markets and environments. I am here in Portland,OR this week for a color marketing conference. As I take in the city I will post sites and images that inspire me. This photo was taken near an old sportings goods store on a classic overcast northwest day. I love the way old vintage signs look with the years of patina aging the paint.
